The movie “THEY LIVE” prophetically speaks about the control of citizens through the mass media. It shows that the only real solution is the awakening and informing of the public, so they can realize how they are being manipulated by the elites. But since prophets don’t exist, this film proves something else: that as early as the 1980s, the elites’ plans for the global subjugation of citizens were already hiding in plain sight.
The protagonist, a drifting laborer looking for work named John Nada (played by professional wrestler Roddy Piper), accidentally discovers a pair of sunglasses that allow him to see the world as it truly is. Through the glasses, Nada sees that many of the people around him are actually aliens in disguise, manipulating humanity through subliminal messages in the mass media and advertising. Words like “OBEY”, “CONSUME”, “CONFORM”, and “SLEEP” are revealed behind billboards and magazines.
Nada begins a lonely and violent struggle to expose the truth and wake people up, with the help of a fellow worker he meets, Frank Armitage (Keith David). The film culminates in a clash with the aliens and their human collaborators. Ultimately, by destroying the transmitter that hid “them,” humans were able to see them and break free from their control.
“They Live” is highly politicized, denouncing:
- Capitalist manipulation
- Social inequality
- The passivity of citizens
- The dominance of the mass media
The aliens in the movie function as an allegory for the elites who control the world.
Although it didn’t initially achieve huge commercial success, “They Live” has since acquired a cult status and is considered today one of the most important political science fiction films. It has inspired comic books, conspiracy theories, memes, and even artists (such as Shepard Fairey with his “Obey” artworks).
“They Live” is full of social and political commentary. The special sunglasses that John Nada finds are the most direct symbol of awakening (seeing reality).

The aliens in the film are a powerful symbol of the economic elite, multinational corporations, and the upper social classes that ‘suck’ the resources of the working class.
Working class and social inequality
Nada is a homeless laborer, without an identity or a future. He lives in shantytowns alongside other economically oppressed people:
- He represents the average citizen struggling for survival.
- The film presents a society where the few have everything and the many are hypnotized and impoverished.
Some people willingly collaborate with the aliens, enjoying wealth, power, and privileges They represent the members of society who betray their fellow human beings for personal gain. A form of embedded corruption within the middle class.
Mass Media as tools of manipulation
Television and the media are presented as tools of hypnotism. The aliens use a signal to keep humanity in a state of sleep — both metaphorically and literally.
According to the film, the mass media distract attention from essential problems and cultivate passivity and consumerism.
Violence as a means of awakening – Radical revolution
Nada’s decision to use violence to awaken society highlights a dark but timely idea. In a world where reason and persuasion are not enough, the path to liberation perhaps requires conflict. A radical perspective on revolutionary action against a deeply unjust system.
The film does not offer an easy or romantic solution. It emphasizes that:
- The world is not as it seems.
- It takes awareness, risk, and sacrifice to change it.
